Social Media and the Outdoor Blogger

This is the definitive article on Social Media for the Outdoor Blogger! No, really. It is. Nevermind that the topic has been written about over and over again ad nauseam. This is it! This is the big one! This is where the rubber meets the road and the chicken gets fried! Where the fly gets tied and the squirrel gets skinned! Where the cow gets milked and the…

Ok, actually this is just a short update about where we’re headed in 2012 as it relates to social media. As of right now, OwlJones.com has a Facebook Page, a Twitter Feed, a Google Plus page, a StumbleUpon account, a Pinterest page…well, you get the idea. So many social media outlets, so many ways to connect – but some are becoming more important to us (and to our audience) than others. So we’re at a bit of a cross-roads in 2012. Our community of fly fishers, hunters, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts are letting us know that the task of tracking so much “Fishertainment” across so many platforms is becoming a bit daunting. We hear you…

Fly tying anyone? Our favorite new fly of 2011, The "RD Caddis" gets a facelift for 2012 with a new, closely guarded secret body material.

So in 2012, even though we’ll keep all the cool social media presence we’ve had in the past, you’ll more and more find our best stuff and most recent articles, tips and opinions on the blog you’re reading right now and (in much shorter form) on Twitter. Our Twitter Follower count as grown substantially since we started “tweeting” last year and we’ve decided (over fried rice and a few egg-rolls) that a substantial portion of our virtual “eggs” should go into the Twitter basket.

Now, you may be asking yourself why things have been taking off for us on Twitter? I think most people use their Facebook accounts more to promote their articles and connect with their fans and readers, don’t you? So why are we growing like the proverbial weed (on Miracle Grow) with Twitter? Well, I’ve got a few theories about that:

  1. Twitter itself is growing “like a weed” and every day thousands of new, legitimate users sign up and start Tweeting.
  2. People who Tweet seem more willing to share content than people who follow us on Facebook or Google Plus. (Why? Dunno.)
  3. On Twitter, you only get small doses of me and apparently I’m much easier to take that way. (Shut up, dear. I put it in there. I hope you’re happy!)

We look forward to sharing things with you in 2012 like never before – from our Beginner Fly Tying Series to the live Radio Show to the dozen or so more ideas I’ve got planned this year! You’ll still be able to connect with us on G+ and Facebook, but if you’re looking for the easiest way to get your daily fix of “Fishertainment”check out our Twitter feed!

We look forward to seeing you there. Tweeting you there. whatever.
