T.F.O.’s BVK Conversion Rod Kit

Have you ever wished for just a little more rod – without having to slap down another $200-400 for it? Well, thanks to T.F.O. your wish has been granted.

We talked with Kent Edmonds of T.F.O. last Saturday at the Great Southern Fishing Show about the BVK Conversion Kit they’re offering. Unfortunately, the sound quality was so poor inside the exhibit hall that our interview didn’t capture half of what Kent had to say – but we did promised Kent that we’d report on the BVK and I definitely think it’s a concept that’s worth a closer look. For some of you, this may not be news, but it was the first I’d heard about it and it sounds like a great idea to me!

The BVK Series is a “finely tuned instrument” according to the T.F.O. website and just holding one in my hands I can tell they mean what they say. It was light and responsive, while retaining a price-point that’s well below the industry average for better quality rods. I’ve inspected many rods costing twice as much that didn’t have the same attention to detail and light weight that the 8 ft. BVK did. As a matter of fact, one such rod – a White River Vanguard that we inspected later in the day over at Bass Pro Shops – had the reel seat fall off right in my hands. (Don’t worry though, the guy at the counter was going to “super-glue it” back on. The rod cost $390, just FYI )

But the real kicker of the BVK Series is this 8 ft. 3 wt. BVK – which features a carbon fiber reel seat and “ultra light-weight chromium impregnated stainless snake guides” (Say that 3 times, fast.) AND can be transformed into a 10 ft. (that’s right – TEN FOOT) Czech nymph rod! What’s more – because it’s a 3 wt. it’s also good to go as a 10 ft. lay-it-down-like-buttah dry fly rod.

They also have a 10ft. 5 wt. BVK if something with a bit more heft is what you need, but the BVK Series is designed for “presentation” and if you’re going to be lobbing a heavy double-tandem rig with extra shot – the “Mini-Mag” rods or something from T.F.O.’s TiCr Series is probably what you need.

We appreciate Kent talking with us, and we were really disappointed that the video didn’t pan out. But don’t let that stop you from visiting their website and checking out all the great rods (and there are ALOT of them!) they have to offer.  They have a new BVK reel that’s pretty hot, too! You can also find them on their Facebook page, if that’s your thing. Thanks Kent! We hope you and T.F.O. had a great Show!

I have 3 TFO rods. I love em all. I dont think there is another rod I’d throw at this point. I might be getting a 4th by the looks of this new one.

I’ve got one, but it seems a bit heavy. Its one of the cheaper ones though and I’ve had it quite awhile.

Looks like they do have some inventive stuff though. That’s really cool!

What weight is yours?

Can’t you read…I said it was heavy :) Its a 9′ 6wt. I think I paid a little over $100 for it. It’s noticeably heavier than my BP 9′ 6wt, but I’m sure its a faster action.

Kinda like ” What size fly is that?” ………” Uh, it’s a …medium.” :)
